Answer: Lost foam casting is a form of investment casting, but instead of a wax investment a Styrofoam investment is used instead. An investment is a substance which is wasted during the process of casting thus it is called an investment, you have invested this substance to obtain the finished aluminum casting. The process goes like this. First the sign is designed in a cad-cam program. It is then sent to the cnc machine where the part is machined into the investment (Styrofoam) the Styrofoam is then coated in a refractory plaster to maintain the desired finish on the part. The part is then immersed in a casting sand which is composed of clay and silica. Aluminum or bronze is then melted in a crucible and then the metal is poured into the mold. The molten metal hits the Styrofoam and the Styrofoam is instantly vaporized. The metal displaces the Styrofoam and replaces it and when it cools the new sign has been formed. Cast aluminum signs are very durable and resistant to weathering and corrosion. A cast aluminum sign can last for many years.
